The Bernhardt Legacy Society

The Bernhardt Legacy Society is the signature planned giving society for UNC Asheville. Named in honor of John C. Bernhardt, Jr., a beloved professor of biology who served the university for over four decades, this society will recognize and steward those who include UNC Asheville in their documented planned gifts. Mr. Bernhardt's lifelong dedication to student success and his extraordinary philanthropic commitment - gifting more than $1 million to support scholarships and student programs - exemplifies the values that this society seeks to perpetuate.

Membership in the Bernhardt Legacy Society will be extended to all individuals who:

  • Include UNC Asheville in their will or living trust.
  • Name UNC Asheville as a beneficiary of a retirement plan, life insurance policy, charitable trust, or other planned gift.
  • Provide written documentation of their planned gift intention.
  • The Bernhardt Legacy Society will also recognize and include endowments made at the minimum $25,000 level to UNC Asheville, as these gifts are used in perpetuity.

Members of our society are presented with a custom lapel pin and are listed in our publications (except where anonymity is requested). Members are also invited to annual University events and programs..
